How to Call Reconsideration & Support

Get the best results when calling a bank's support or reconsideration line by following these tips. Preparation and politeness make a big difference!

  • Be polite and patient: Agents are there to help you. Kindness and patience go a long way.
  • Have your info ready: Keep your application reference number, SSN, and details about your application handy.
  • Be ready to explain: If denied, ask for the reason and be prepared to discuss any recent credit activity or inquiries.
  • For reconsideration: Briefly explain why you want the card or new credit, how you plan to use it, and why you're a good customer.
  • Mention your relationship: If you have existing accounts (checking, mortgage, other cards), bring it up(it can help your case).
Bank-specific tips:
  • Amex: The agent will ask why you want reconsideration, then send your case to a backend team. Decisions rarely change unless there's a clear error or new info.
  • Bank of America: Prior banking relationship helps. Unless something positive has changed in your credit, expect the decision to remain the same.
  • Capital One: Most algorithmically and system controlled bank. Capital One almost never overturns a denial, and agents have little power to escalate or reconsider. If denied, it's usually best to wait and try again in the future.
  • Chase: Most flexible reconsideration line. Chase often gives a decision on the same call. If you're under 5/24, have no late payments or red flags, you'll likely be approved. Be ready to move credit from another Chase card if needed.
  • Citi: You'll get a decision on the call, but they won't reconsider until you've received the denial letter in the mail.
  • TD, U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo: Be clear and concise. For Wells Fargo, a compelling reason for your request can help.
